Earlier this year, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Sobey Art Award curatorial panel announced the five Canadian artists competing for this year’s $50,000 top prize. Founded in 2002, the Sobey Art Award is given annually to an artist under 40 who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated. The five 2010 finalists are Brendan Lee Satish Tan, West coast and Yukon; Daniel Barrow, the Prairies and the North; Brendan Fernandes, Ontario; Patrick Bernatchez, Québec; and Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby, Atlantic coast region. An exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal will feature selected work by the shortlisted artists from October 8 to January 3, 2011. The winner of the 2010 Sobey Art Award will be announced at a Gala event at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal on November 18, 2010.
