Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens

Artifact or fine-art? The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia presents an exhibition featuring recently discovered photographs and the pivotal role of photography in changing the perception of African objects from artifacts to fine art. For a period of almost twenty years, Man Ray (1890-1976) produced photographs of African objects. Along with providing insight into Man Ray’s photographic practice, the exhibition raises questions concerning the representation, reception, and perception of African art as mediated by the camera lens. The images will be on display until January 23, 2010.
