From the luxury shopping areas downtown to the strip malls in surburbia; these spaces are evidence of the cyclical crises that are an inevitable part of our economic system. The empty interiors remain barren for weeks, months or— in some small communities where the major employer has retreated— even years. These are photographs of the everyday. They are anywhere and everywhere – rich, poor, suburban and urban – an inevitable marker of change.
The New Gallery, Calgary, presents the latest work from Michelle Normoyle, Pretty Vancant, an exhibition exploring vacant retail spaces from the urban and suburban North American landscape, until January 30, 2011.
