Viewpoint Gallery in Halifax is presenting Adrian Fish’s Soto/Hasid Project through March 3. The opening reception is February 7 from 6 to 8 p.m., and the Artist’s Talk is February 10 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Photographer Adrian Fish grew up in a conservative Jewish family in suburban Toronto. He attended Hebrew school during his primary years, where the Hebrew language and Jewish values were taught. Later in life, he became an Assistant Professor of Media Arts and a Zen Buddist teacher in the Soto Zen lineage. The majority of people who practice Zen Buddism in North America make the choice as an adult, whereas the people who practice Hasidic Judaism tend to be a mix of those who are born into the community and those who made the choice to follow this branch of Orthodox Judaism as an adult. This exhibition explores the artist’s journey and presents four 30 x 44″ Hasidic portraits facing four 30 x 44″ Buddist portraits.
