From September 13 through 15, there will be a large-format photography exhibition of Youry Bilak’s Hutsuls: In the Shadows of the Carpathians in Toronto. The images will be exhibited in a pavilion on Bloor Street between Kennedy and Glendowynne Road, during the Toronto Ukrainian Bloor West Village Festival. This work will also be presented at the St.Vlad Institute in Toronto from September 16 to 27.
Bilak is interested in minority cultures whose existence is threatened. The Hutsuls are an ethno-cultural group in Ukraine, around the Carpathian Mountains. Bilak’s work explores their traditions and celebrations, clothes, music, dance and art. The goal of the exhibition is to increase awareness of the Hutsul culture. This will be the first exhibition of this work in North America.
