The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff is presenting Colin Smith: Camera Obscura from April 4 through June 7. This Calgary-based photographer makes images of camera obscuras (Latin for “dark chamber”) that reproduce an image of the outside inside the space or room. Smith uses a Boler trailer, abandoned buildings and firetower lookouts as camera obscuras, then captures them on 4 x 5 film transparencies, resulting in intriguing, unique images that make the viewer question their perception.
